The Custom Framing Process: A Playbill Extravaganza!

May 17th, 2012 by

So many fun covers!

We had an exciting new custom project this week that we were itching to share. We had so much fun with this project we decided it was a great opportunity to share how much work goes into a specialty piece of this nature.

This lovely client came to us with tons and tons of Playbills that they have been collecting from all of the broadway shows they have seen. We decided to take that collection and make a wonderful way for them to remember their favorites. There are three pieces total, each with nine playbill covers. Now they’ve got a truly personal collection of art— and a killer conversation starter!

      Mapping the Heart

      Heart Map :: Foursided

      Everyday of the year, Foursided’s experienced designers are given challenges to overcome and find solutions to
      in the world of framing. Unique opportunities that let us flex our framing muscles.

      A client recently brought in her own map and a photo from a design mag featuring framedheart-shaped maps,
      asking if we could replicate them.  So we did!

      Heart Map Detail :: Foursided

      We mounted sections of the map and cut them into heart shapes by hand, then raised the top mat to create a nice
      sense of depth.  There will be a total of 4 pieces when we’re through, and the client will have custom keepsakes
      to display in her home for years!

              Conservation Framing for Depaul University’s New Academic Building

              December 29th, 2011 by

              This past fall, Foursided was commissioned to complete a unique framing project for Depaul University’s new Academic Building in Chicago’s Lincoln Park, seen in the rendering to the right.

              The designers had selected several incredible artists to adorn the walls of this new building and required the expertise of Foursided, including:

              - Conservation framing for over 30 original works of art,
              - Stretching canvases, and
              Conservation mounting works on paper.

              We framed two of the largest works of art in recent memory at Foursided, which required extra care and attention to ensure that neither the artwork nor the framing were damaged during the project. In fact, the frames were so large, they required the specialized support from one of our supplier partners.

              The project was focused on making the artwork the center of attention, so we used simple ebony, white, and wood profile frames. Several of the large works on paper were framed in white shadow box frames with plexiglass made for protection from UV sun rays.

              This was a special project where we also had the pleasure of framing incredible paintings by our friend and artist, Joe Boudreau. If you would like to see more of his work, please visit his blog.

                Making A Conversation Piece Out of All The Stuff You Collect

                November 21st, 2011 by

                People, that’s you, are always telling us they have this box of stuff under their bed or at the back of their closet, full of things they love, but have no idea what to do with them. We say frame it in a shadow box why don’tcha?

                To be used as an example, we have a collection of early 20th century marquee letters that when put together, make the entire alphabet.

                After we layout our letters and design that we’d like the final piece to look like, we just order a frame.  Luckily we have a frame shop, so we can do that.  It’s like magic.  We then do final measurements for our frame installation.

                We then simply, line the walls with the same color as the background, which holds the glass to the front to create the “box” look.

                Now we will raise the letters at different levels to create an unexpected texture to the piece.  We’ll raise and lower objects in most shadow boxes ‘cuz it just looks cooler.

                After our glue has dried we’re recovering from the arduous task of individually mounting 26 letters to its backing, we have some coffee.

                Time for the final “fitting” process of fastening it in and putting a paper seal on its back to make the back look pretty.  You’re never going to see the back again so, it’s important that it looks good to the wall, who will be looking at it, up close, for the rest of its life. Time to hang it up, pat ourselves on the back and compliment each other on how creative we are!
